United Crash out of Chatham Cup - Nomads 3-2 CUFC

Reigning champions Christchurch United were knocked out of the Chatham Cup in the second round by Noads United on Saturday afternoon.

Head Coach Ryan Edwards, who was absent from the touchline due to illness, made one change from their victory over Nelson Suburbs, with Joel Peterson starting on the right flank ahead of Jackson Cole. Edwards also tinkered the team positionally, seeing Riley Grover play at centre back and new signing Travis Graham playing in midfield.

United controlled the first ten minutes and may feel they should have taken the lead during that spell, with both Joel Stevens and David Yoo coming close.

However, it was Nomads who took the lead. Thomas Chao lost the ball in midfield and the home side quickly pushed forward and punished The Rams just after the half hour mark.

CUFC got off to the worst possible start in the second half. Young starlet Flynn Holdem scored just one minute after kick off.

United responded through a lovely move on the left hand side which was finished off by David Yoo, who has now scored in each of his last six matches.

Nomads retrieved their two goal lead promptly after an unfortunate deflection wrong-footed Steven Van Dijk in goal, who was left helpless as Holdem slotted home his second and Nomads' third.

The Rams piled the pressure on in the latter stages. Josh Holland was sent off after a dangerous challenge on Travis Graham, which gave United the impetuous to go for it. Stevens slotted home the following free kick to make it 3-2. Despite a late flurry of pressure, Nomads held on to knock out the champions!
