Cashmere Technical were on the winning side of the 2026 Steve Sumner Shield as Christchurch United continue to get valuable minutes into the tank before the Southern League season begins.
The first half was a very even affair, with both sides struggling to create clear opportunities on goal. However, it was the away side that took the league midway through the opening 45 minutes. It was a combination that regular Southern League viewers would have seen plenty, with Lyle Matthysen firing the ball across to Garbhan Coughlan, who slotted the ball home to give Tech the lead heading into the break.
Dan Schwarz's side doubled their lead early in the second half. After a few changes to the back line at half time, the Christchurch United defence were caught a bit lackadaisical and Tech made it two.
It was United that ended the game strongly, piling on the pressure through the searing runs from Joel Stevens and Bray Whitecliffe on the flanks. It was the former who came closest to getting a goal back for The Rams, with his curling effort from outside the box just flying past the wrong side of the post.
Christchurch United will play their final pre-season match next Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm against Nomads United at Tullett Park.
