Christchurch United 5-2 Dunedin City Royals - Southern League Round Three

Christchurch United Football Club secured an impressive 5-2 victory over Dunedin City Royals FC in a fiery encounter during Round Three of the Southern League. The match was held at the United Sports Centre, and both teams were keen to secure a win as both clubs went into the game undefeated in 2023.

Christchurch United started the match with great intensity and took the lead just eight minutes into the game through a goal from Pierce. Though Dunedin City Royals pulled a goal back on 23 mins which was the first goal conceded by United this year. The home team continued to dominate the early stages of the match, and it wasn't long before Philip scored a well-deserved goal in the 32nd minute.

Dunedin City Royals FC tried to get back into the match but struggled to break down the well-organized Christchurch United defense. In the 39th minute, Maclennan scored a third goal for Christchurch United, much to the delight of the home supporters.

As the first half was drawing to a close, Christchurch United's Stokes scored a fourth goal in the 45th minute, putting his team in complete control of the match. Dunedin City Royals FC had a mountain to climb in the second half, trailing by four goals to nil.

Christchurch United's Philip grabbed with a fantastic goal in the 82nd minute, scoring his second of the match and putting the result beyond doubt.

In the dying moments of the game, Dunedin City Royals FC managed to score another goal, but it was nothing more than a consolation as Christchurch United emerged as convincing 5-2 winners.

It was a memorable night for Christchurch United Academy graduate, Mac Prathumphithak, who made his senior first-team debut for the club. The youngster put in an impressive performance, showing great composure and skill on the ball, in one moment taking on two defenders, getting through both of them and shooting a serving shot just wide.

Mac is the 10th Christchurch United Academy player to grab a senior mens first team debut since 2019, Nick Murphy, Daniel Meyn and Jackson Cole debuted in the 2022 National League. Frewen Watts, Diego Lavin, Jago Godden and Noa Prestel debuted in the Southern League earlier in 2022. Zach Bennett and Oscar Obel-Hall debuted in the last few years.

Overall, it was a fantastic performance by Christchurch United, who thoroughly deserved their victory over a spirited Dunedin City Royals FC. The result will give Christchurch United a boost of confidence going into their next fixture vs Selwyn United, while Dunedin City Royals FC will have to regroup and work hard to bounce back from this defeat.
