Christchurch United held off an eager to impress University of Canterbury AFC today to go top of the Southern League table for the first time this campaign!
United got off to a strong start, putting three past the UC keeper in the first half. United captain Joel Stevens scored either side of Thomas Chao's first goal of the season before The Rams put themselves in a spot of bother. Mac Prathumphitak was shown a red card just before half time for what was deemed a dangerous challenge by the referee.
Pero Forman pulled one back for UC just after the hour mark. United responded 10 minutes later after Joel Stevens put a dangerous ball across the box that UC couldn't deal with, and Niko Bruce scored his first Southern League goal for the club to make it 4-1.
UC did not stop battling, scoring a further two goals to make the final moments extremely tense. However, United stayed strong and took home the three points.
16-year-old Waisea Henry made his first start for The Rams today. Head Coach Ryan Edwards described Henry as "humble, a hard worker, good technique, and one of the kindest kids on the planet."
