In our column ‘Coach Profile’, we introduce a coach of Christchurch United and tell you more about the background of the coach. We tell you everything about the history and experience of the coaches, so you know your kid is in good hands and get coached in a good way, so all kids can develop theirselves in the best way possible. This time, we zoom in on Mat Boon.
Mat Boon is already involved in the Christchurch United Academy since 2015 and is currently the head coach of Christchurch United U13 Blue. He started coaching in 2009, originally because the team where his son was playing in, didn’t have a coach.
Mat: ‘I would never have guessed I would enjoy it [coaching] so much and I have tried to grow my knowledge of the game through reading about football, watching football and participating in courses from New Zealand Football’.
After he started coaching the Nomads United Mini’s in 2009, he coached the U8, U9 and U10 of the same club in the following years. In 2015, Mat went to Sydney as assistant coach of the Christchurch Football Academy team, which competed at the Sydney International Cup.
From that tournament on, Mat stayed with the Christchurch Football Academy and coached different age groups. He started coaching the U11, before coaching the U12. In 2016 he was also the coach of the U12 team that participated at the Christchurch International Cup and the Sydney International Cup.
Mat Boon has done several coaching courses – Junior Level 1, Junior / Youth Level 2, Youth level 3 and Youth Level 2 and Senior level 2 – through the years and will undertake the Oceania B License in 2018.
‘The experience i have gained since joining Christchurch United FC has been invaluable and I relish the opportunity to coach in such a great environment. I love all football: Coaching, playing and watching’, Mat says.
